Form Follows Function. If you function like a couch potato, your form will follow. It’s time to get off the couch, throw away the potato chips, and function like you’ve never functioned before. Here’s the deal. You can lose fat by changing the way you eat, BUT (notice my big but!) changing the way you eat will not help you to gain muscle. Muscle is the key to revving up your metabolic engine, preventing injury and improving your overall strength. Plus, when you move your body regularly and with vigor, you reduce your risk of all the scariest of the scary conditions like cancer, diabetes and heart disease. (hello—really, who wants to deal with those?!?)Some might call me a radical, but I think my request is justified. I want an hour a day. That’s right, you heard me–an hour each and every day. Think about it like this: if you are a typical American, you wake from a good night sleep (laying down for 7 hours), get in the shower (stand for 15), eat breakfast (sit for 15), commute to work (sit for 30-60 minutes), sit at your computer (8 hours), commute home (30-60 minutes), eat dinner (sit for 20 minutes), check your email/tech stuff (30 minutes) and relax on the couch with a good book or the bachelor (or maybe even biggest loser) for an hour or two. Our bodies were made to move, but let’s face it—movement is not something we get much of. So let’s do it, let’s start a #MovementMovement! Get an hour a day, baby. Here’s how to get started…
- First, read this motivational article—“Excuses or Results: You Can’t Have Both” by an amazing sports psychologist Dr. Tanya Prewitt. Get out of your head and into those workout clothes!
- Grab your schedule and work in a work out. Remember, failing to plan is planning to fail. You’ve got to plan for it or it’s never going to happen.
- Get off the couch. It’s overrated and there’s always DVR…
- Find something you love to do. Please allow me to make a few suggestions:
If you hate the feeling of being tight and tired after a workout, you’re going to love yoga. I want to introduce you to my favorite yogi, Laurel Attanasio. Want to learn more about the health benefits of yoga? Read Laurel’s latest post on my blog. Also, you can buy the YouAnew Yoga DVD in my online store!
My all time favorite way to work out is running. I know, I know it’s nothing flashy, but the high you get from pounding the pavement is unlike anything else. Nervous about getting started? Check out First Strides or you local couch to 5K. I’ve had a lot of YouAnewers take this route and love it.
Want something you can do in the comfort of your own home? The Tracy Anderson Method rocks. It combines cardio and strength training exercises customized to your body type.
Okay, let’s get this #MovementMovement underway!! You CAN do it!!
