Interested in working with Dr. Kristen Bentson to learn more about functional healthcare, nutrition, prevention, and wellness through lifestyle? Fabulous.
That means you’re ready to make the lifestyle changes necessary to change your health and better your life.
Despite all of the advances in medicine (all the new pills and procedures!) problems like autoimmune disorders, hormonal issues, thyroid conditions, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, depression, anxiety, Alzheimer’s disease, and arthritis are on the rise.
The passive approach to healthcare, for many people, really isn’t working.
In many cases, chronic conditions respond well to specific and systematic lifestyle changes.
Dr. Bentson’s life’s work is devoted to helping individuals harness the power of diet and lifestyle modifications for whole health.
The functional healthcare approach might be the right approach for you. “The functional medicine model for health care is concerned less with what we call the dysfunction or disease, and more about the dynamic processes that resulted in the person’s dysfunction.”
– Jeffrey Bland, PhD, FACN, FACB. Defining Function in the Functional Medicine Model. Integr Med (Encinitas). 2017 Feb; 16(1): 22–25.
Think of it this way: if you go to a healthcare provider with your foot on a tack, you want the practitioner who will find out why and how to get your foot off that tack, not just the doctor who only wants to hand you pain medication. While the pain-reliever can help, it’s not addressing the reason you’re having symptoms in the first place.
But there’s a catch. Conventional medicine is generally pretty passive. You take a pill, get a procedure or have surgery — none of these methods of treatment require much from you. When it comes to functional healthcare, results depend on your willing participation to actively address areas of your health and life that need change.
The best approach is often an integrative approach. One where conventional and functional healthcare are blended together. While the goal of any provider should be to reduce or eliminate the need for medication, there are many cases where the support of medication is necessary for optimal functioning.
